February 8, 2010 – Tinton Falls, NJ- The American Red Cross Jersey Coast Region, made up of the Jersey Coast Chapter, Southern Regional, Salem and Gloucester County Chapters have been operating three shelters and supporting one additional shelter providing food, blankets, cots and hygiene products to people inhabiting shelters in Cape May County due to the blizzard which still leaves over 50,000 people without power. The first Red Cross Shelter was opened on Friday Night at 10:30 p.m. and since then, hundreds have been sheltered.
Chief Disaster and Logistics Officer Leo Pratte, Disaster Coordinator Robin Porreca and several volunteers have been running and overseeing the regional operation at The Disaster Operations Center (D.O.C) based at the Jersey Coast Chapter. Currently, two Red Cross shelters are open, with 10 total operating in Cape May. Along with responding to this disaster, the Jersey Coast Chapter has responded to a single family fire in Keansburg, multi family fire in Toms River and a water main break in Brick Township since Friday night.
In preparation for the next significant snow storm set to arrive Tuesday evening, the Jersey Coast Chapter is taking necessary precautions. “We are prepping shelter trailers and positioning them strategically to prepare for the snow and calling all essential personnel to be ready to respond.” Leo Pratte, Chief Disaster Officer.
